The examination that prospective Licensed Practical Nurses, or LPN's are required to pass is called the NCLEX-PN. It is the pre-cursor to LPN qualification and it opens the doors to those LPN jobs of your choice. The examination is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and covers the following principal areas:
- maintaining a safe and effective care environment
- promoting and maintaining healthy living
- physco-social integrity
- physiological integrity.
The examination is undertaken on a computer and does vary from year to year in both length and the topics covered.
As at the end of 2006 there were over 1,500 state approved LPN training programs for you to choose from, many of which may now be undertaken online. Typical program length is between 12 and 15 months, although some LPN programs may last up to 2 years.
