Without doubt the wildest and most rugged department of the Languedoc region, in the South of France, is the Lozere. The "forgotten" department is situated high up on a plateau to the north of the region and driving around is a feast for the eyes, but a shock if you were expecting the same sophistication as its neighbouring areas to the South. Not much goes on up here except farming.

Having said that, it is a fantastic destination for ramblers and nature lovers. Even in the high season you could rent a holiday home for a couple of weeks and feel like you had the magnificent landscape all to yourself. The capital city is Mende and is really nothing more than a large town, although it does have charm. The whole department itself is the least populated in the whole of France with barely 73,000 inhabitants. The city of Nimes, barely two hours away, has twice the population. This vacation destination is the ultimate in getting away from it all!
